Five signs your cutting scope needs a specialist, not a concrete cutter

Most cutting jobs belong with a good concrete cutting company. Some do not. Here are the five signs a scope has crossed the line into specialist territory, where the methodology decides the outcome and the wrong contractor becomes expensive fast.

1. The structure is beyond a normal saw

Standard wall saws top out around 700 mm of cut depth. If your element is a metre thick, heavily reinforced, post-tensioned or composite steel and concrete, you are in wire saw country, and wire sawing at that scale is planned around wire storage, panel weights and crane charts, not around a day rate.

2. Heat is not allowed

Live fuel systems, hydrocarbon-contaminated steel, ATEX zones, tank farms. If a hot work permit is hard to get or impossible, the scope needs cold cutting: no flame, no sparks, no gas-freeing. Contractors who only own oxy gear will quote you a method the permit office will reject.

3. The asset around the cut must keep operating

Cutting inside a live water plant, over an operational metro station box or beside a running process line changes everything: vibration limits, exclusion zones, physical overcut protection, water management the asset owner can sign. Two of our case studies, Prospect and Burwood, were exactly this kind of job.

4. Access is the problem, not the concrete

Confined spaces, tunnels, shafts, remote sites a demolition spread cannot reach, structures where nothing heavier than a person can go inside. Specialist cutting exists because saws, wire and water can be brought to places machines cannot. If your constraint list starts with access, the cut method must be chosen around it.

5. Someone has to sign the methodology

When the principal wants a written cut sequence, temporary works design, load path and lift study reviewed by their engineers before work starts, you need a contractor whose deliverable is the document as much as the cut. That is our cutting engineering service, and it is usually engaged well before tender.

And if none of these apply?

Then you do not need us, and we will say so. Straightforward commercial cutting, coring and grinding is handled by Perfect Concrete Care, our sister business within Perfect Group. Sending the work to the right team keeps your price honest in both directions.
