TBM & Tunnel Cutting

TBMs and tunnel structures are complex, heavy and difficult to access.

We cut and segment TBMs and modify tunnel structures where cranage, access and clearance are all against you

Where it makes sense:

  • Segmenting TBM shields, cutterheads and gantries for extraction after breakthrough.
  • Removing or modifying TBM sections in shafts and caverns with limited cranage.
  • Cross passage openings, portal modifications and lining penetrations.
  • Cutting cast-in items, ring beams and headwalls without vibration.
  • Fit-out phase cutting where the programme cannot absorb percussive methods.

Recent Australian projects have extracted TBMs in pieces weighing hundreds of tonnes from shafts tens of metres deep. Every one of those extractions depends on cutting the machine into sections the crane and the shaft can actually handle, in a sequence that keeps the remaining structure stable.

How we deliver it:

  • Work with the contractor and the OEM to understand the machine configuration and what the shaft, crane and programme can take.
  • Plan the segmenting sequence and put the methodology in front of the client before the first cut.
  • Combine diamond wire, cold cutting and controlled mechanical methods to suit each component.
  • Hand over sections sized to the lift plan, on the programme dates.
The buyer on these jobs is the tunnelling joint venture, and we work to their prequalification, their permits and their programme.
